Math Week 9:  Patterning and Simple Algebra

1.  Watch the opening video on simple algebra equations.

2. Here are some examples of easy algebra questions.  Ready!  Its easy as 1, 2, 3

5 + x = 12
5 + 7= 12
x= 7

Algebra is finding what the missing variable is.  The variable in this equation is x= 7

15- x = 10
15-5= 10
x= 5

12- y = 10
12- 2 = 10
y= 2

The missing variable is x=5

Try and answer the following questions using algebra.  What is the missing variable?

1. 15- x = 9
2. 6 + x = 16
3. 14 - x =10
4.  5 - n =3
5.  16- y = 6
6. 18- j =4
7. 8 + x =11
8. x + 2 = 18
9.  10- x = 4
10.  5x= 25  ( this one is multiplication)

3. Now for the next part these 3 numbers are all part of a fact family.  12, 2, 6.  Using these 3 numbers come up with 2 multiplication and 2 division questions.

12, 2, 6

2 x 6= 12 and 12 / 6 = 2
6 x 2 = 12 and 12 / 2= 6

7, 4, 28
7 x 4= 28, 4 x 7 =28
28 / 7= 4, 28 / 4 = 7

Just make sure you use all your numbers it is easy!  For division the bigger number goes first.

1.  10, 5, 2
2.  7, 3, 21
3.  4, 12, 3
4.  6, 24, 4
5.  3, 3, 9
